Associate Project Manager
A role has arisen in the Facilities and Buildings department at one of the most cutting-edge scientific research campuses in the UK. Having doubled in size over the last 20 years and with plans to constantly and dramatically improve facilities, our client is looking for an ambitious and motivated Associate Project Director to ensure the highest quality, maintainability and efficiency in operations.
With a variety of facilities, from residential blocks and a nursery to wet labs and research centres, this role involves interacting with a diverse customer base and a vast range of stakeholders.
What you’ll be doing
As Associate Project Director, you will play a crucial role at every stage of the process; guiding each project from initial conception, all the way through to completion and handover. You will have full responsibility and management over the coordination of a variety of different projects – conducting reviews, evaluating quotes, proposals and performance, and reporting progress and budget control to the Capital Project Director.
At the beginning of any new project, it all starts with you. You will be responsible for progressing customer requirements, cost estimates and quotes in order to complete a project initiation document for approval. Assisting with acquisition planning, you will also be developing the project execution plan, preparing drawings and design calculations.
You will be needed to call upon your in-depth knowledge and experiences to give your clients the best possible options for specifications, estimates, and detailed programmes for appointed work. Seeing your clients through their projects, you will remain their point of contact and information throughout; providing documents and drawings, and liaising with stakeholders at key stages of development.
This vital position involves the financial control of every project. Reporting back to the Capital Project Director, you will sign off invoices, update cost control records as the project progresses, and use Agresso for order placement, receipting and the management of project accounts.
In addition to overseeing other crucial aspects of projects, you will have full line management for a hardworking, dedicated project team. Overseeing development and training, performing appraisals, coaching individuals and setting objectives, you will help them to achieve the highest levels of performance and productivity possible. You may also provide out of hours cover to supervise subcontractors in the execution of project work.
Within your team, you will work to develop, cultivate and promote an attitude of accident prevention and damage control as an integral part of operations. You will control the standards and quality of the installation of goods and services in accordance with company requirements. By constantly encouraging improvements in health and safety practice, you will effectively help to prevent injury and damage to your personnel and project environment.
It will be up to you to ensure all projects are completed to the agreed time, quality and cost constraints, satisfying all regulatory and statutory requirements. You will also supervise the FAT, installation, commissioning, testing and handover of projects, including complete O&M’s, post practical completion defect period and retention release.
You have a Higher National Diploma/Certificate or the equivalent with relevant experience, as well as membership to an industry recognised engineering institute. You will be currently or working towards being chartered status registered with the engineering council, and potentially have a degree in building services engineering.
Proficient in Autocad, with a full understanding of ACDP, you’re highly skilled in all Microsoft Office programmes and MS Project.
Experience in project delivery is essential for this role. You will have worked from project inception, detail design drawing, services calculations, procurement, appointment, through to construction, practical completion and handover. With a proven track record of delivery of facilities and services to programme and approved budget, you can also demonstrate previous experience of managing project teams in changing environments.
You will be able to effectively present ideas and design options and solutions with your professional recommendations to key stake holders. The ability to develop and maintain relationships with a variety of different people is essential. You will demonstrate an attitude of inclusivity and respect for all, and will be flexible and adaptable in a changing environment.
Experience of working in the Pharma and/or Academic Research design of laboratories is also beneficial.
Educated to a degree or equivalent level, you’ll have previously worked as a Commercial Manager or Project Manager. Experience of working in the museum or cultural sector and the holding of an accredited professional project management qualification would both be considered desirable.
