The Climate-KIC programme will support the delivery of a suite of programmes that aim to enable the realisation of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth through the development of innovative Low-Carbon products and processes. Promoted under the unified banner of the Energy Capital Climate-KIC Accelerator programme and managed as a block grant, its constituent elements include the Accelerator, Greenhouse and Pioneers into Practice initiatives. The programme will have a particular focus upon driving innovation within the Energy sector and aims to accelerate impact within the climate innovation space through collaborative research and development activity. This will be realised through the provision of targeted development support to Start-ups and Entrepreneurs and by coordinating activity that fosters relationships that spur collaboration between partners. 

The Programme Lead (Climate KIC) will coordinate the day to day development and risk management of research- focused business collaborative projects funded via the Energy Capital Climate-KIC Accelerator programme. The Post Holder will lead on the delivery of each of the programmes, day-to-day project management and budget management and engage with the business community to achieve outcomes. 

Coordinating the business engagement activity of each of the programmes constituent elements will require the Post-Holder to actively work with partners to identify appropriate companies for support to ensure that they benefit from the development mechanisms available in a targeted manner. The business support function of the role demands a pro-active ability to bring the Post Holders business expertise to bear, to mentor and challenge clients. This will also entail coordinating the delivery of training offered by a network of trainers. Working as part of a dynamic team, the Post Holder will be expected to collaborate with academics researchers, Research Development Managers and Business Engagement Managers to promote and disseminate opportunities offered via the programme and its partners. They will also capture the activities outputs in support of evaluative activity. In addition, the Post Holder will also design and deliver evaluative activity (including overseeing and supporting the development of case studies) that demonstrates the value of the programmes constitute elements and overarching impact. 

The duties encompass managing the full grant life-cycle supporting applicants to apply for funding, through post award and to final financial reporting and the submission of claims. To fulfil the role, the Post Holder is expected to maintain oversight of the administration of the funds in line with the University’s procedures whilst also ensuring compliance with Climate-KIC/EIT funding guidelines. This will require the development and use of appropriate financial monitoring and reporting systems to produce reports for both internal and external purposes. Linked to this, the post holder is expected to be proactive in working with colleagues to maximise opportunities for impact. Throughout, the post holder will ensure that the programme is delivered in manner that ensures good governance and will coordinate the delivery of its associated Grants Panels and Programme Management Board. 

Person Specification

Essential 
 

  • Demonstrable experience of supporting businesses to benefit from collaborative research and development grants.
  • Demonstrable experience in all aspects of grant management – pre and post award and subsequent reporting.
  • Evidenced ability to build positive relationships with clients to identify and accelerate the development and growth of their businesses ideas
  • Demonstrable capability to organise and facilitate workshops and events
  • Ability to apply knowledge to resolve complex problems and risks
  • Ability to understand, conceptualise and interpret the requirements of staff including senior management and the funder
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively (written, presentational, verbal) at all levels
  • Ability to respond to changing priorities and different situations
  • Capability to complete reports/surveys/information etc., in support of the development and delivery of impact related activity
  • Demonstrable experience of reporting against KPI’s and in undertaking impact driven evaluation activity
  • Ability to summarise complex issues/concepts and present them appropriately for a range of audiences
  • Ability to plan, manage and prioritise own workload, respond to changing priorities and deliver innovative solutions to deadlines maintaining a consistently high standard of service and meeting client needs
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-functional team across partner organisations
  • Good client relationship management and interpersonal skills and an ability to work closely with other people at all levels of seniority, both within and outside the University
  • Understanding of the higher education research environment, its research functions and markets.

  • Graduate with good honours degree (preferably a research degree) or equivalent experience

Desirable 
 

  • Experience of managing grant programmes within a complex multi-partner project preferably within a higher education or research management environment
  • Knowledge of national and regional funding structures, organisations, mechanisms and policy that include those from Research Councils
  • An understanding of the Engineering and Physical and Life and Environmental Sciences and impact agenda would be an advantage
