The role will be based at the BGS Headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham
Appointment will be at UKRI Pay Band F and the salary is £50, 702 - £56,336 per annum, for an exceptional candidate, an additional allowance up to £5k may be paid to enhance the salary level.
Full-time – 37 hours a week, flexible working options such as compressed hours may be available and we offer a hybrid working pattern, spending a minimum of 2 days a week on site on average.
3-year fixed term appointment – until 31/1/24., however there is potential for this post to become permanent
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey that provides a core science mission to inform government of science related to the subsurface and its interfaces and also undertakes applied research for solutions to earth and environmental processes, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI as well as through research grants and via private sector contracts.
BGS has an annual budget of approximately £60 million and employs circa 615 people. It has two main sites, a head office in Keyworth near Nottingham and the Lyell Centre, which is a joint collaboration with Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. BGS works with more than 150 private sector organisations as well as having close links with 40 universities and sponsors approximately 100 PhD students each year.
About the role
This is a new role in our organisation and works alongside the BGS Head of Projects and Programmes to support the creation of the BGS Portfolio Management Office (PMO), overseeing delivery of a portfolio of high-profile business improvement projects as well as high value capital projects. A priority focus will be management of the delivery of the UK Geo-energy Observatories (UKGEOS), a £31 million capital project designed to create world class subsurface energy research test centres to develop home grown energy supplies in the UK and create world-class subsurface research expertise in the UK.
The postholder will support the Head of Projects and Programmes to build upon the BGS existing project management resourcing model where project management activities are embedded in science, digital, communications and operations areas and will develop the existing project management capability, establishing standards, methods and processes to ensure projects are delivered efficiently. Delivery & impact: creating and leading the delivery of a portfolio of projects (high profile/high value) to ensure that the objectives are clearly defined and achieved within the agreed time, cost and quality constraints. Project management: Providing day to day management and leadership of a portfolio of projects and project teams by providing effective leadership and management controls, setting project controls, designing the project structure, managing the budget and delivery methodologies as well as managing effective transition between project phases. People and practice: Supporting existing Project Managers in embedding effective project management practices on a day-to-day basis. Providing support, guidance and coaching for project teams. Risks and issues: Identify and monitor project risks and issues within the overall BGS risk assurance framework, develop mitigating actions and escalate as appropriate. Identify and work with related projects to manage interdependencies.
In this role, you will be required to have the following priority qualifications, experience, skills and abilities as set out in the essential criteria of the skills specification. Please see full skills specification criteria for this post.:
- A degree (or equivalent work experience) and at least one of Agile Practitioner, PRINCE 2 Practitioner, APM Practitioner, or equivalent higher level project management qualification
- Track record of successfully managing several low or medium complexity projects (or leading key work strands within projects) with a working knowledge of project management methodologies and continuous improvement tools and techniques
- Track record of team leadership – demonstrating an ability to engage, motivate and conflict manage others and deliver results.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate across a range of stakeholders
- Ability to make sound decisions and resolve complex problems to operate at pace in a changing environment
