Does the idea of working collaboratively to build the tools that change our understanding of the universe and taking the lead on ground breaking astronomical instruments excite you? The UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) in Edinburgh is seeking a project manager to drive the development of sophisticated and ambitious projects. If you want to work in a stimulating and collaborative environment, at an organisation with a friendly and flexible work environment, this could be the job for you!

The UK ATC is a world leader in telescope and astronomy technology and the UK's national centre of excellence in this field, designing and building ground and space-based instrumentation for large astronomical observatories and international missions.

As a professional engineering organisation, we employ innovative technology across all engineering fields, including complex optical and infra-red detectors, vacuum-cryogenics, control electronics and software, for both astronomy and wider applications. Find out more about what we do here.

The role of the senior project manager is to lead on the UKs interests in the Square Kilometre Array, the world's largest radio telescope, with the potential to work concurrently on other smaller projects.

We are looking for someone with significant multi-disciplinary project management experience likely gained through working on engineering projects in industry or academia. We are also looking for someone with strong communication, organisational and presentational skills.

Working alongside engineers, scientists and technicians, and reporting to the Head of Strategic Development and Programme Delivery, the main responsibilities will be to deliver projects to meet science goals, to budget and schedule and to required safety standards. And as most of our projects involve wider collaborations with UK academia and partners in other countries, experience working in such settings and driving project benefits to the UK is also important.

Due to the international nature of our work these projects may require a certain amount of national/international travel to collaborate closely with partners, customers and UK collaborators (once travel restrictions allow).

Our excellent package of benefits includes:

  • Flexible 30 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays and 2.5 privilege days.
  • Flexible working hours.
