Outstanding opportunity for an experienced Project Manager to work in a leading science environment offering excellent employee benefits.

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) Particle Physics Project Support Office supports the management of many of the UK's national and international particle physics research programmes. As a project manager in this non-technical role you will manage one or more of a wide range of science research infrastructure projects. Our growing portfolio includes DUNE, Hyper-K, CMS, SWIFT-HEP, LHCb, AIT and AION. Working conditions are flexible reflecting the geographically distributed nature of the projects, although it is primarily office-based.

The projects involve the definition, design, construction, co-ordination, delivery and commissioning of significant technical and scientific contributions to international experiments, ranging from mechanical hardware (such as large detector components), civil engineering (underground tunnels) through innovative electronics, to software for experiment control and data analysis. They are mostly waterfall but there is an element of agile. Once commissioned, these experiments contribute to the fundamental understanding of the building blocks of the universe in a field where only a few people in the world have such enviable access.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A recognised project management qualification equivalent to APM PMQ
  • A degree (or equivalent) in a numerate subject
  • Experience of delivering projects as project manager
  • Up-to-date understanding and evidence of applying formal project management methods, controls and processes
  • Confidence and self-motivation, with strong presentation skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both on your own initiative, setting priorities and making decisions as required, and as a member of a wider team
  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders, communicating the project vision, including any changes, and escalating concerns where necessary.

The role gives considerable scope for personal and professional development as well as the opportunity to get involved in some of the most complex and exciting projects in the world today.
You will gain excellent experience of formal project management in a collaborative environment, as well as further training, aiming to reach Chartered Project Professional within a suitable time frame.

Employee Benefits:

We are offering a permanent position that provides a whole host of benefits including; 30 days holiday (in addition to bank holidays), an excellent pension scheme, employee shopping/travel discounts, a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme, plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have a great work life balance.

UKRI is an Equal Opportunity & Disability Confident Employer.

The closing date for applications is 19th June 2022.
