The Client and Legal Project Management Department collaborates with our legal teams to co-deliver projects to target margins and also with our Clients within their in-house legal teams. Involvement in projects may simply include advice or support but will also include managing delivery of the full project/matter lifecycle.

The Legal Project Manager is responsible for managing and delivering client facing legal projects/matters, internally and client side in Teams within Practice Groups. The main focus will be on Project Management. The role will also focus on improving profitability, efficiency and client service.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable project management capabilities preferably gained in a professional services environment. Previous experience of working in a legal environment is not essential but would be beneficial. They will be someone who is able to work with limited supervision to effectively manage project delivery.

The Legal Project Manager will work with lawyers and other key stakeholders, including clients, to define the scope of projects/matters and to identify the most appropriate project delivery approach based on business needs, project risk, impact and cost. Strategic support and operational project management support on projects/matters are key elements of the role.

The successful candidate will have the ability to understand and assess business and change management needs at project level and will have experience of delivering complex projects working across multiple business functions, teams and geographies/jurisdictions.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Working with our Pricing Team from inception to ensure project/matter estimates are in line with project objectives through to completion of post-closing activities to ensure client benefits realisation is achievable
  • Strategic management and co-running of legal projects/matters, taking full responsibility for achieving fixed price targets or target operating margins
  • Defining and validating scope of projects/matters in accordance with clients' and Pinsent Masons’ project/matter objectives, not simply management of scope
  • Managing projects/matters within time constraints and taking full responsibility for financial/budget management
  • Tracking progress and escalating changes in scope, time or budget to project stakeholders
  • Proactive identification and management of Project Risks and Issues, providing options for mitigation or resolution
  • Exceptional Stakeholder Management skills with the ability to work collaboratively in complex, fast-moving environments
  • Arranging Kick-Off Meetings, Project Team Meetings and Steering Meetings
  • Post project/matter review and Lessons Learned exercises
  • Project Communication and all Reporting requirements including management reporting
  • Drafting of all project-related documents including project plans, schedules, milestone and action trackers
  • Identification and tracking of deliverables, dependencies and assumptions
  • Promoting collaboration between project workstreams including Pinsent Masons' lawyers and our clients
  • Management of concurrent projects
  • Working with Practice Group Leads, contributing to the continuous improvement of the Client and Legal Project Management Team's offering including project management methodology, governance, training for legal teams and legal project management best practice
  • Focussed on lean principles and use of innovation and business process mapping to further advance efficiencies in legal processes and project management
  • Responsibility for identifying the most cost effective resource on projects/matters.
  • Responsibility for disputes and transactional projects/matters alike
  • Support for Transformation Programmes where significant Bids or Tenders are won
  • Responsibility for mentoring trainee/apprentice project managers in future Graduate Recruitment initiatives

 

Person Specification

 

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualified
  • Project Management qualification preferable

 

Relevant Experience

  • Demonstrable and comprehensive track record of client facing project management roles
  • Experience of working in the legal sector, or professional services environment within a Programme/Portfolio environment
  • Understanding law firm financial and performance metrics and the link between effective project/matter management, profitability and delivering value to clients
  • Experience of managing projects within transformation programmes
  • Experience of working with international teams, preferred

  • Demonstrable advanced planning, co-ordinating, management and communication (verbal, written and presentation) skills are necessary. Attention to detail is essential
