About the Role

Through our vital research, the National Physical Laboratory is helping support scientific and commercial innovations, international trade, environmental protection and health and wellbeing. As a Senior Project Manager, you’ll work on a number of large-scale, high-risk and technically complex projects and contracts that are destined to shape the world we live in.   At NPL, we touch ordinary lives in extraordinary ways and you could too.

You'lll be assigned to some of our more high-profile R&D and commercial projects, which could see your work with UK government and industry, as well as European and international collaborators. Critical to your success, is your ability to build strong relationships to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the highest quality – as well as being strictly compliant to our governance standards.  Working with the Group Leader and customer, you’ll keep on top of progress, follow-up on deliverables, highlight any risks, and keep budgeting, forecasting, and financial controls on track – issuing reports and invoices in a timely manner. You’ll also see to it that the right resources are available, for both live projects and for any bids or tenders that might need their expert advice. As an organisation we learn from one another, so you’ll take the mentoring of members of your team seriously, leading by example and demonstrating best-practice at every stage of delivery. 

About You

You are a highly experienced project manager who’s used to working on sizeable and complex projects. It’s one of the reasons you will need to have excellent communication and negotiation skills, as well as experience of working within a PMO environment.

Essential experience and abilities

  • Strong track record of successfully leading and managing multiple large, high-risk projects for a range of stakeholders

  • Experience of pulling together senior management across a business to deliver success

  • Ability to define the scope, baseline and deliverables of highly complex projects through interactions with senior external and internal stakeholders

  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the business

  • Ability to understand and navigate the political landscape to ensure that delivery meets the customer’s requirements and expectations

  • Experience of working within, and driving improvements through, a Project Management Office (PMO) environment.

  • Ability to travel both outside and within the UK

Skills, Knowledge and Background

  • Proficient in utilising and applying a number of project management methodologies

  • APM Project Management Qualification or equivalent

  • Proficient in Microsoft Project

  • Ideally educated to degree or equivalent level
