Do you have the vision, experience and person-centred values to be able to make a real difference to the lives of people with mental health needs? We have an exciting new role for a dynamic and proactive mental health practitioner/manager to lead a community-based recovery service serving South Birmingham.

Our recovery service is part of the City-wide Birmingham Mental Health Recovery & Employment Service (MHRE) provided in partnership with Better Pathways and Birmingham MIND and is delivered from Recovery Centres located in Northfield, Harborne and Yardley. You will be responsible for directly managing the recovery service delivered from the Northfield Hub and other locations in South-West Birmingham as well as having responsibility for the operational management of the whole service.

You will be responsible for developing and overseeing a vibrant programme of recovery and wellbeing support for people with severe and enduring mental health problems, provided through one-to-one goal planning and support, Personal Health Budgets (PHBs), recovery college sessions, peer support and peer-led social groups. You will ensure that the service is fully integrated with the IPS employment service offered by Better Pathways.

You will ensure that individuals are enabled to make progress in their personal recovery journey and to attain goals relating to their mental health/wellbeing, quality of life and community connections. This will be achieved through co-producing outcome-based plans which enable individuals to develop social links and enjoy meaningful activity, whilst building resilience and capacity for self-management. You will ensure that the Hub and community sessions offer a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere and that staff are skilled in promoting recovery and positive engagement.

We are seeking a highly committed and professional mental practitioner with relevant supervisory or management experience of delivering recovery-focused community mental health support. An understanding of recovery principles and methods is essential as is the ability to embed these into practice. You will re-inforce a culture of responsive, person-centred practice, ensuring that relationships are based on respect and unconditional positive regard. You will promote the service to BAME groups and all sections of the community and ensure that there is a strong commitment to equality and diversity. You will be committed to community asset-based approaches and be able to collaborate creatively with community partners as our delivery model is characterised by the use of volunteers, sessional workers, peer supporters and by close partnership working with statutory mental health services and voluntary agencies

As the Project Manager you will ensure that our services are delivered efficiently and effectively and meet all contract requirements, quality standards, outputs and outcomes. You will need to have strong verbal and written communication skills and be confident in the use of IT as you will be responsible for collating data and preparing contract monitoring reports. You will work closely and in an accountable manner with Better Pathways, as the Prime Contractor and with our partners at Birmingham Mind. Your varied and rewarding role will include responsibility for:

  • Leadership of the services provided in the locality
  • Deputising for the Recovery Service Manager
  • Management and co-ordination of all aspects of service delivery
  • Recruitment, supervision and support of staff and volunteers
  • Developing and delivering a vibrant and engaging recovery programme
  • Marketing and promoting the service to stakeholders and service users
  • Contract compliance, data collection and achievement of all KPIs and planned outcomes
  • Promoting excellent customer care and positive partnerships

You must have at least two years relevant senior practitioner or management experience gained in a mental health service. A professional mental health or equivalent qualification, such as Diploma in Social Work or Nursing or NVQ/H&SC Diploma Level 3/4/5 is required. A degree or management qualification is desirable. You will have a good knowledge of mental health needs/conditions and helpful interventions, service provision, legislation and good practice. You must demonstrate excellent assessment, support planning and report writing skills. The ability to contribute to staff training and experience of supervising students on placement is desirable.

You will be able to demonstrate skills in managing and motivating staff and managing their productivity and performance. You will be able to lead from the front and delegate effectively as well as promoting effective team work. You will be warm and emotionally intelligent with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with service users, staff and partner agencies. You will be a confident, credible and professional practitioner, able to communicate clearly and persuasively and to promote the service to maximise referrals and service utilisation.
