Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) Item Writer
About APM
We’re Association for Project Management (APM). We’re a professional membership organisation that sets the standards for the project profession. As a registered charity, we reinvest our surplus for the benefit of our members and the profession. We deliver education and develop qualifications. We conduct research and provide knowledge and resources. We run events and share best practice. We give people the opportunity to connect and provide community for our individual members and corporate partners, wherever they are. Above all, when doing so makes a difference, we challenge the status quo.
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for project management subject matter experts to be involved in qualification and assessment development. We'd like to hear from suitably qualified and experienced project professionals who are interested in getting involved in this area of work.
About the role
We are looking for experienced project professionals to join us as Item Writers for the Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) Standard. This is an opportunity to contribute directly to the development of high-quality, fair and robust assessments for the project profession.
Item Writers will create assessment items for both the technical knowledge examination and the accountability and complexity assessment. Working remotely, and following comprehensive training, you will develop questions and associated mark schemes in line with a detailed brief and the ChPP assessment specification.
Assessment development is collaborative and iterative. You will receive support and feedback from your APM contact and fellow Item Writers throughout the process.
What you will do
Complete all mandatory training and meet agreed deadlines for item writing and peer review.
Create clear, accurate and appropriately challenging assessment items that meet the item-writing brief and align with the ChPP competence criteria.
Develop robust mark schemes that identify the knowledge, features and evidence expected in a high-quality candidate response, including the allocation of marks against each criterion.
Ensure assessment content is inclusive and avoids discrimination and bias.
Peer review questions and mark schemes produced by other Item Writers, providing constructive written feedback.
Respond proactively to feedback and revise questions and mark schemes where required.
Maintain regular contact with APM and complete any associated administrative activities to specified deadlines.
Protect the confidentiality and security of all assessment materials.
What we are looking for
You must:
Hold Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) status.
Have experience in a project professional delivery capacity, preferably within the last five years.
Have a sound knowledge and understanding of APM’s Competence Framework 3rd edition and the Chartered Standard competences.
Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current practice and methodologies through continuing professional development.
Not be affiliated with any ChPP support role, including coaching, training, mentoring or working for an accredited provider.
Have a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and written English.
Be IT literate, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, and able to meet tight deadlines.
Be able to give and receive feedback constructively and comply fully with confidentiality requirements.
It would be desirable if you also have:
A project management qualification equivalent to APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or higher, preferably an APM qualification.
Experience of assessment in an education, training, assessing, marking or mentoring capacity.
Experience of writing qualification or assessment content.
Please do not be put off if you have limited experience of writing assessment content as comprehensive training will be provided before item writing activity begins.
Time commitment
Item writing is undertaken remotely throughout the year. For the initial phase, you must be able to support the following activities between October 2026 and January 2027:

Peer review of approximately seven assessment items, including written feedback, between November 2026 and January 2027.
Attendance at a follow-up meeting on item development between November 2026 and January 2027.
Appointment arrangements
Appointments will initially be made on a probationary basis. Continuation will depend on the quality, accuracy and timeliness of outputs during the initial item writing phase, including adherence to item-writing principles, responsiveness to feedback, engagement with training and review activities, and the ability to produce assessment content that meets the required standards.
